Look at what we are Learning

Scientist of the Day:

Sammy started off our Second Round of Scientist of the Day. What Second Grader does not like Slime!!!? Borax, school glue, food coloring, and water were mixed together to create a gooey, blue slime!! What fun! Thank you to Sammy and to your mom for organizing all the materials.

We were all surprised to see that water, baking soda, and grape juice would produce "invisible ink" Melissa combined water and baking soda to make the secret mixture - she used a Q tip to write a message with this "ink" - when the work was dry, she dabbed some grape juice over the writing and SURPRISE, there was the message. Thank you Melissa.

Hadley showed us that you can make art with just a plate of milk - dripping a few drops of food coloring onto the plate covered with a thin layer of milk was the first step. Then carefully, dripping small amounts of dish soap into the milk, Hadley created a beautiful design. Thank you Hadley for the "Magic Milk".

"Dancing Raisins" was the name of Sean's experiment. Using club soda and raisins, we observed how the bubbles in the soda attach to the raisins. The buoyancy of the bubbles lifts up the raisins, overcoming the weight of the raisins. Thank you Sean.

"Rainbow Rain" was the name of Kelly's experiment. Food coloring, vegetable oil, and water were the ingredients. We all know that oil and water do not mix, but it was beautiful to see the food coloring fall like rain in the mixture. Thank you Kelly.

Maggie demonstrated that a drawing, with a dry erase marker, on the bottom of a glass bowl, looks like it is moving. This, of course, is achieved with the bowl full of water. It was fun to see the the image move in the water. Thank you, Maggie.

Who would have ever thought that an elephant needs toothpaste? Well, Landon is prepared with his version of "elephant toothpaste". This experiment requires just a small number of ingredients, but it makes a "volcano of foam," which was so awesome. Hydrogen peroxide mixed with yeast and warm water, results in this amazing conclusion. Thank you, Landon.

It was exciting to watch Owen create his Water Fireworks. Food coloring, water, and oil made this possible. Food coloring dissolved into the water, creating a beautiful rainbow of colors. Thank you Owen.
