This week in school, we will continue to be working on learning routines/classroom rules, following directions, and different prayers. To be able to learn how to make the Sign of the Cross and learn some prayers that we will be saying throughout the school year. *-Prayers:- Hail Mary, Our Father, Grace Before Meals, Grace After Meals, Glory Be, Angel of God, Creation Poem, A Special Prayer. *-We will Continue to discuss Mary, The Rosary, Making Good Choices, and Practice Kindergarten Procedures. Bible:- the story of God's love for his people. The Bible is God's Word.
Sacred Scriptures:- another way to refer to the Bible.
God:- the Creator of all that exists. God is one being who is a Trinity of Three Persons:- Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
Jesus:- the Son of God and the Second Person of the Trinity. Jesus is our Savior.
genuflect:- to show respect in church by touching a knee to the ground.
holy:- relating to God or things of God.
Gospel:- the story of how Jesus Christ came to save us and bring us home to the Father in heaven.
welcome:- to greet someone in a kind, friendly manner.
faith:- a gift from God that enables us to trust in God.
Savior:- Jesus, the Son of God, who came to save us from our sins.
Good Choices:- Doing what is right.
Annunciation:- the announcement to Mary that God had chosen her to be the Mother of the Savior.
Assumption:- Mary's being taken to heaven, body, and soul.
queen:- female ruler with great power.
rosary:- a circular chain of beads on which we pray 50 Hail Mary's and other prayers and think of God.
Visitation:- Mary's visit to Elizabeth to share the Good News that Mary is to be the Mother of God.
Ten Commandments:- the 10 rules that God gave to Moses to guide us in loving God and others.
Christ:- a title for Jesus that means "anointed with oil" (like a king).
saint:- a person who loved God on earth and now lives with God in heaven.
eternal life:- living forever with God in glory.
chrysalis:- the hard silk blanket inside which a caterpillar changes into a butterfly.
Alleluia:- a word we use to offer praise to God.
Resurrection:- the raising of Jesus from the dead three days after he died on the Cross.
Easter:- the celebration of the raising of Jesus Christ from the dead. Easter is the most important Christian feast.
Holy Week:- the week before Easter when we celebrate Jesus giving us the Eucharist, his Suffering and Death.
joy:- a sense of deep happiness.
Holy Spirit:- the Third Person of the Trinity. The Holy Spirit is our helper and our guide.
symbols:- objects that stand for or represent something else.
celebration:- a happy gathering of people in honor of someone or something.
Sunday:- the day on which Jesus rose from the dead, a special day for Christians to worship God.
Creed:- a prayer that says what we believe about God.
Light of the World:- a name we use for Jesus to remind us that he lights our way to the Father.
missionary:- someone who brings the Good News of Jesus to others.
righteous:- morally right or justifiable, virtuous.
Cross:- a symbol that reminds us of how Jesus died to save us.
heaven:- the state of living with God forever.
suffering:- the state of experiencing pain, distress, illness, or hardship.
Sign of the Cross:- the tracing of the cross on ourselves to show our faith in Jesus.
meal:- eating, usually with others.
flour:- grain that is ground for baking.
grain:- the seed or fruit of certain food plants.
Eucharist:- the sacrament in which we give thanks to God for our Savior, Jesus Christ. We celebrate the Eucharist at Mass. It is our most important way of praising God. At Mass, we listen to the Word of God and receive the Eucharist, the Body and Blood of Christ.
apostles:- followers of Jesus, Jesus' special helpers.
Last Supper:- the last meal Jesus ate with his apostles before he died, during which he offered himself to the Father for us and gave us the Eucharist.
Mass:- the most important way that Catholics praise God. At Mass, we receive the Eucharist in Holy Communion.
paten:- a small disc or plate used to hold the eucharistic bread that will be consecrated.
vestments:- the special garments worn by clergy when they are celebrating liturgical or other services of the Church.
Church:- God's family, the people who follow Jesus Christ.
church:- the building where God's people gather together to worship.
parish:- a local community where Catholics gather to celebrate the Eucharist and receive spiritual care under the leadership of a pastor appointed by the bishop.
worship:- to praise and thank God.
altar:- the table in God's house on which the Eucharist is offered.
ambo:- the stand where God's Word is read.
baptismal font:- the place in church where we were baptized.
celebrant's chair:- special seat for the priest who is leading or celebrating Mass.
deacons:- men who are ordained to assist priests and bishops for ministry and service.
holy water:- blessed water used for Baptism, for blessing ourselves entering church, and other holy purposes.
holy-water font:- container for blessed water that reminds us of our baptism.
Lectionary for Mass:- the book containing the readings from the Bible read at Mass.
sanctuary light:- the lamp in church that tells us Jesus is present in the Blessed Sacrament reserved in the tabernacle.
stained-glass windows:- colored windows that show pictures of Jesus, Mary, the saints, and our beliefs.
priest:- a man who is called to serve the Church by celebrating Mass, leading the parish, and teaching others about God.
sanctuary:- the space in church that is around the altar.
feelings:- an emotional state or reaction; being happy, sad, afraid, angry.
Original Sin:- the sin of Adam and Eve, who disobeyed God. We are all born with Original Sin.
sin:- an unkind or unloving act that offends God and hurts others or ourselves.
temptation:- thoughts, words, or feelings that can lead us away from God.
forgiveness:- the act of responding with goodness to people who have done wrong to us.
trespasses:- wrong things that we do.
miracle:- something amazing that cannot be explained. A miracle is something that only God can do.
love:- to care unselfishly for others. God loves us and wants us to love him and love others.
New Testament:- the story of Jesus and the early Church.
Old Testament:- the story of God's plan for the salvation of all people.
flock:- a group of sheep.
pasture:- grassy land where sheep eat.
rod:- club used for protection against wild animals.
sheepfold:- pen where the sheep stay during the night.
shepherd:- one who takes care of sheep.
staff:- long, slender stick, usually with a hook on the end, used in herding sheep.
Good Shepherd:- a name for Jesus that describes how much he loves and cares for us.
bishop:- a leader in the Church. Bishops are the shepherds of God's people. They do the work of the Apostles.
Baptism:- the first sacrament. Baptism makes us part of God's family, the Church.
sacrament:- one of the seven signs of grace that Jesus gave the Church that gives us God's grace. The seven sacraments are Baptism, Eucharist, Confirmation, Penance and Reconciliation, Anointing of the Sick, Holy Orders, and Matrimony. Each sacrament gives us the help or grace we need to live as Jesus wants us to live.
chrism:- oil mixed with perfume and consecrated by the bishop for use in the Sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation, and Holy Orders.
anoint:- to pour oil over a person's head to make him or her holy; in the Bible, kings, priests, and prophets were anointed.
trust:- a firm belief in the truth, reliability, or strength of someone or something.
choice:- something we freely decide to do.
grace:- God's gift of his life to us.
choosing:- to make good choices over bad choices.
Hail Mary:- a prayer that asks Mary to help us grow closer to her Son, Jesus.
hail:- hello.
Mother Mary:- the Mother of God and our Mother.
Mother of God:- one of the titles given to Mary, as she is the Mother of Jesus, the Son of God.
Son of Mary:- the name given to Jesus that shows he was born of the Virgin Mary, the Mother of God.
Son of God:- a name that tells us that Jesus is the only eternal and divine Son of God.
Advent Wreath:- an evergreen wreath, with four candles, that reminds us to prepare for Jesus' coming.
Christmas:- the celebration of Jesus' birth.
Advent:- the four weeks before Christmas. During Advent, we prepare for the birth of Jesus, our Savior.
manger:- feeding box for animals.
stable:- place where animals are kept.
evergreens:- plants whose leaves remain green throughout the year; used in Advent wreaths to symbolize continuous life and hope.
tradition:- beliefs, actions, practices, and customs that are passed down from one generation to another as ways of expressing truths and commemorating significant occasions.
Thanksgiving:- saying thank you to God for our blessings.
bounty:- God's goodness and generosity.
horn of plenty:- a kind of basket usually filled with fruits, grains, and nuts, used to represent God's blessings.
praise:- our telling of the happiness we feel simply because God is so good.
human:- an individual created by God with a body and soul, made in his image and likeness. Humans, as God's visible creatures, are able to know and love God their Creator.
precious:- very dear to people; special, important, loved.
soul:- the part of us that is like God and lets us think, choose, and love.
Holy Family:- the family made up of Jesus, Mary, and Joseph.
family:- people who love and care for one another; a family includes parents, brothers and sisters, and sometimes others.
Christian:- a person who believes in Jesus and who loves and follows him.
Father in heaven:- God.
Holy Communion:- the reception of the Body and Blood of Christ during holy Mass.
pope:- the head of the Church who lives in Rome.
Lord's Prayer:- the prayer that Jesus gave us to show us how to pray to God the Father. This prayer is also called the Our Father.
hallowed:- holy.
Our Father:- the prayer Jesus, God's Son, taught us; also called the Lord's Prayer.
pray:- to listen to and talk to God.
Amen:- a prayer word that means "Yes, Lord".
blessing:- a prayer to God asking him to especially care for a person, place, thing, or activity.
crucifix:- a cross with the figure of the crucified Jesus.
church:- the building where God's people gather together to worship.
Church:- God's family; the people who follow Jesus Christ.
hope:- the trust that God will always be with us.
pew:- seat in church where the people pray.
tabernacle:- place in church where Jesus is present in a special way, in the Blessed Sacrament.
Trinity:- the mystery of one God in Three Divine Persons:- God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit.
creation:- everything that God has made. God said that all creation is good.
create:- to make out of nothing.
