Typography is the art of letters and how they are shaped, spaced, and arranged. This course introduces the language of typography, its history, mechanics, formal qualities, and the theories that inform its use in design. Beginning with Johannes Gutenberg and his invention of a printing press with movable type, this course will survey historical typefaces from the 15th C. to contemporary digital type, including important influences such as the Dada and Bauhaus art movements in the 20th century. Projects will address the history and fundamental principles of typography and ask students to recognize how choice of typeface and its layout affects communication. A final project will involve the creation of a typeface, or logotype, for a specific client/company.
This piece also depicts a scene from Stanley Donen's Seven Brides for Seven Brothers. The poster explores the shapes of the letters in an argument between Adam and his younger brother, Gideon, concerning Adam's new daughter.Â

This piece utilizes dialogue from a scene in Stanley Donen's 1954 film, Seven Brides for Seven Brothers, to invoke the image of a bouquet of flowers, a typical symbol of courtship. In the scene, the brothers are meeting their sweethearts for the first time and are eager to impress. Each flower contains the dialogue of a couple with the stems belonging to the dialogue of Adam and Millie, the first couple.
