Greece is a Parliamentary Republic. Every five years Parliament elects the President as Head of State. The Prime Minister is appointed by the President as Head of Government. The Ministerial Council makes up the Government of Greece.
Legislative Branch
The legislative branch is a 300 seat unicameral, or single, legislative chamber. This is also known as Parliament. Parliament is a democratic institution that speaks for the citizens through its elected members. The current head of Parliament is Constantine Tassoulas.
Executive Branch
The executive branch is made up of the Head of State (President) and the Head of Government (Prime Minister).
Katerina Sakellaropoulou was seleced to succeed Prokopis Pavlopoulos on January 22, 2020. She is Greece's first female president and has been in office since March 13, 2020.
Kyriakos Mitsotakis has been Greece's prime minister since July 8, 2019. He succeeded Alexis Tsipras. His job is to preserve the unity of the government and to manage its activities.
Judicial Branch
The Judicial system is split into two jurisdictions, administrative and criminal/civil. Those jurisdictions are then separated into courts of first instance, courts of appeal, and Supreme Courts. Supreme Courts can take on conflicting decisions, judge the integrity of legal provisions and can also declare an unconstitutional legal clause powerless.
The Panhellenic Socialist Movement and the New Democracy Parties
Greece's political system has two leading parties, the Panhellenic Socialist Movement and the New Democracy.
The Social Panhellenic Movement is a social democratic political party. It was founded on the ideas of independence, popular sovereignty, emancipation and democracy. Contrary to then, this party is currently shifting the tax base, lowering salaries and decreasing social welfare.
The New Democracy is a conservative political party. This party supports European integration and believes in less government intervention in the economy, meaning lower taxes and more private ownership.
