The First Graders worked on reading and clapping rhythms. They can identify a pair of eighth notes, quarter notes, quarter rests and half notes.  They had fun listening to music performed by Arab Americans in celebration of Arab American Heritage month. They like to look at the posters of these musicians that are posted in the music room and match the picture to the music.

We continued singing a variety of different songs. We have been listening to examples of Arab American Musicians whose posters are up in the music room.On Friday, students played a game where they needed to draw notes on the staff to match the letter that was called. There note reading skills are improving.

In addition to our sacred movement songs, 4 corners game, Mass songs, musical cartoons, and rhythm review, these students have been working as a class to complete "treble clef stories." These are one page stories that use notes on the staff to spell some of the words. It is great practice for their note reading skills and they think it is fun!

There has been a great deal of laughter, music and learning during the First Grade music classes this week. These students keep reviewing their treble clef note reading skills using a 4 corners game that has them looking for a specific word spelled with notes. Their concentration is showing on their faces as they read the words using notes. The students also practiced the songs for the Living Stations. They are excited to see their buddy class present this beautiful prayer and be able to participate singing the musical mediations after each station.

Amazing Performance at Grandparents Day!

I am very proud of you. It was a great display of your Stage Presence,  Knowledge of Music, Presentation of Music,  Audience Participation,  Transitions and Effort. If you were absent, you need to make up the assessment in person on Tuesday, March 19th during morning recess. Videos were only accepted in advance.

We will be preparing the songs for the Living Stations this week.

Next Week, they will listen to Mariachi music while they complete an activity about the Guitarron, Violin, Vihuela, Guitar, Trumpet, Guiro, Arpa Jarocha, Marimba and Maracas. We played a matching game about those instruments this week.

We are continuing to learn about Celia Cruz the Queen of Salsa and the following musical instruments: Guitarron, Violin, Vihuela, Guitar, Trumpet, Guiro, Arpa Jarocha, Marimba and Maracas.

We read the book Celia Cruz Queen of Salsa and listened to her sing Quimara. We watched a video called If I Were a Mariachi about some of the musical instruments in a Mariachi Band: Guitarron, Violin, Vihuela, Guitar and Trumpet. The students then identified these instruments on the posters in the music room. We also practice the choreography for "You Are Good."

The First Graders sang beautifully at our All School Mass today. We sang "You Are Good," "O Taste and See" and in honor of Mary, the Blessed Mother's birthday, "Mother Mary, Pray For Us."  We are beginning to work on the choreography for "You Are Good." We began to spell words on the music staff.                  Remember         Every Good Boy Does Fine for the lines.                            F A C E for the spaces.

We continue to develop our note recognition for both rhythm and melody. They love to sing "You Are Good," "O Taste and See, " and "Mother Mary, Pray for Us."

Play a variety of musical styles in the car on the way to or home from school. In addition to being beneficial for developing language skills, listening to music increases memory skills.

We had an amazing first music class on Friday. We reviewed note values: whole, half, quarter and eighth notes and the letter names on the treble clef staff: E, G, B, D, F on the lines and F, A, C, E for the spaces. We sang "High and Low" and began "You Are Good."

The First Grade Music Classes always begin with a sacred movement song to reinforce concepts of beat/rhythm/melody as we celebrate our love of God!  We will review the different notes and their rhythmic value and reading the letter names of the notes on the staff.  We will continue to use our portable staff (our hand)

Our First Graders will continue to work with rhythm sticks, sing, dance, learn about different instruments and hear stories about music from around the world, composers and performers.

Our Goals:

Reading music: Letter names

Understanding Rhythm

Performing Rhythms

Recognizing different instruments

Performing solo

as a group

Comparing vocal and instrumental music

Using our voices correctly

Composing
