Seventh Grade ELA curriculum moves students to the secondary level of approaching reading and writing
Literature selections are based on genre. For example, students read works identified as science fiction, horror, narrative poetry, etc.. Students take part in class plays, practicing assuming the roles of the characters rather than simply reading text.
Writing skills focus on answers to specific questions, both in essay and short response form, so that students learn to seriously interpret the question and respond appropriately. Grammatical accuracy is an essential component of good writing, and is stressed throughout the program.
Students are exposed to the elements of poetry – meter, rhyme, basic literary devices, form.
Students are encouraged to use upper level vocabulary, self-edit, and become individually responsible for assignments that are complete, well thought out, and relevant.
