Sixth Grade ELA Curriculum focuses on assisting students to make the transition from the elementary school curriculum to the secondary school curriculum.
Selections in literature include passages to hone reading skills such as identifying the author’s purpose, words in context, and subtopics. Selections also include a study of the elements of several genres, such as the fairy tale, the myth and the legend.
Students are introduced to etymology, giving them a better understanding of where our language comes from, and giving them a curiosity about that subject.
Diagramming is introduced as an aid to grammatical accuracy and logical thinking. Logical thinking is also improved through brain teasers, analogies, and categorizing.
Writing skills take students to the four paragraph essay, teaching them to organize a well-developed response to a specific topic.
Students are encouraged to become self-reliant, responsible, and academically inquisitive, ready to move to the “junior high” years.
