How to View Student Work

How to see student work files:

Many of our student projects are online files: students can sign in and display them on home computer devices. For other projects, using specialized software, here is how to view them... (ps: how to access some of our favorite programs.)

  • Web pages ending with the suffixes “.html” and “.htm” as well as images ending with “.png” and “.jpg” and “.jpeg” and “.gif” can be dragged onto any web browser (Internet Explorer, Firefox, Safari, Opera, Chrome, etc.) for viewing.

  • “Alice” files end with the suffix “.a2w” and can be viewed and edited on pc and macintosh with the free alice program from alice.org.

  • “Sketchup” files end with suffix “.skp” and can be viewed and edited on pc and macintosh with the free "sketchup" program from google.com.

  • “Revolution” and “LiveCode” files end with the suffixes “.rev” and “.livecode” and can be viewed and edited with the 30 day free trial “Livecode” program from livecode.com.
    (

(For example, “haunted.rev” would have a folder nearby called “haunted” if we saved a standalone for home viewing, and that folder would have a standalone copy of the “haunted” project.)

  • “Photoshop” files end with the suffix “.psd” and can be viewed on a macintosh using the free “Preview” program that comes built in. For pc and linux (and mac) there is a free program called “xnview” that can open photoshop files for viewing and for saving in other formats.
( Warning: the download page has a misleading big “download” button as part of an ad for an alleged virus blocker program. What you really want is one of the small red links labeled for windows or macintosh.

Another alternative to photoshop for viewing and editing pictures is the free program ”
Gimp” for pc, mac, and linux.

  • “Garageband” files end with the suffix “.band” and I don't see an easy way to open them in anything but garageband, which only runs on macintosh computers and ipad. When working in garageband a person can save as “.mp3” if they want to be able to play the song on other computers.

Note: sometimes we're still sending student work home on student flash drive usb sticks, but since 2020 most student work is online so that students can sign in to show projects to friends, guardians, and family.
