Rocky Planets = First Four from Sun (Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars)
Gas Giants = Last Four From Sun (Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune)
Weather and Climate
Weather: the state of the atmosphere (heat, dryness, sunshine, wind, rain, etc)
Temperature: the measure of hotness or coldness
Air pressure: air exerting a force on the earth called pressure
Precipitation: any form of water that falls from clouds to the Earth's surface, including rain, snow, sleet, hail, and drizzle
Cirrus clouds: short, detached, hair-like clouds found at high altitudes
Stratus clouds: low-level, flat, gray or white clouds that can cover all or part of the sky
Cumulus clouds: low-level clouds that have sharp outlines (they look like cauliflower)
Nimbus clouds: low-level clouds that produce rain and snow
Vocabulary Words:
Phases of the Moon-the different shapes the moon takes as seen from Earth
Axis-A line which a rotating body (like earth) turns
Orbit-the curved path taken by a planet, satellite, spaceship, around the sun.
Rotation-rotating on an axis (the earth rotates on its axis)
Revolve-to turn on an axis
Revolution-period of time it takes the earth to go around the sun
Full Moon-when the whole moon is illuminated (lit up), occurring when in opposition to the sun.
New Moon-when the moon is in line with the sun & is invisible or visible only as a slender crescent
Crescent-a shape that looks like a ring
Quarter-a phase of the moon when it is 1/4 or 3/4 of the way through its orbit around the Earth
Gibbous-when the moon is more that half full
