Course Description: Students will gain continued knowledge and experience as artists, art critics, and art historians while producing an extensive collection of creative works of art in a variety of two-dimensional media, styles, techniques, and processes. This intermediate course will focus on a more highly developed use of the elements and principles of two-dimensional design as a foundation to making, understanding, and appreciating different types of art. Students will be required to create work outside of class time. The units and objectives included in this curriculum meet the Arizona State Standards for Visual Art.

Standard 1: Create. “Students know and apply the art disciplines and techniques and processes to communicate in original or interpretive work.”

Standard 2: Relate. “Students demonstrate how interrelated conditions (social, economical, political, time and place) influence and give meaning to the development and reception of thoughts, ideas, and concepts in the arts.”

Standard 3: Evaluate. “Students will draw thoughtful conclusions about the significance of art.”

Studio Project Assignments:

This is a studio-based course, meaning the bulk of student class work is based on art production. Student achievement and grades in this class largely depend on the level of quality, completion, and commitment of studio projects. Students are responsible for completing between four to six studio projects per semester depending on time required by the class to complete the various activities. Projects are more involved and challenging than those pursued in the beginning art classes and will frequently require extra time outside of class to complete well.

Final Exam will constitute 20% of the students final grade.

Class Rules

1. Be on time and prepared for class.

2. Follow school rules.

3. No talking during class instructions and demonstrations, except to ask questions.

4. Ask permission to go to the restroom or to get a drink.

5. Clean your area and return the art supplies to the proper storage place.

6. Use all art supplies in the proper manner.

7. Students should have respect for themselves, other students and the teacher at all times.

8. Students are responsible for obtaining notes/materials when he/she is absent.

9. Always do your best work.

Welcome!

We begin the year with our first drawing unit!

The true essence of art is to express oneself. The viewer should be able to see the artist’s personality clearly illustrated in all of their work. This project will require students to dive deep and think of who they are as individuals and artists and decide how to illustrate subject matter that can relay this idea. The major objective of the project will be to relay their personality to their viewer. We will have an in-class critique at the end of the project where the class will work together to decide what type of emotion or personality trait can be evoked from object created from each piece of art. The graphite grid-drawing will hold high expectations for quality and craftsmanship; students will be expected to exhibit their skills and knowledge as drawing artists.

This will serve as the first drawing project for Art 2. Students will be required to create a gridded graphite drawing from a completely original and unique source. The graphite illustration will need be created from a black and white photograph of a specific person, thing or object (no places or ideas). The final project will measure 18”x24” and will be completed in graphite on Bristol board.
