Japan Fest is a one-week celebration of Japanese culture that will be held at Saddleback College the week of October 6th. This year's theme is the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II. We kick off Japan Fest with a film series exploring various aspects of World War II. All movies will be shown in CC 212. Refreshments and snacks will be provided.

Filmed almost entirely in Japanese, this film explores the Battle of Iwo Jima, a critical battle and crucial turning point of World War II. Sushi and tempura lunch provided.

This anime from the world renowned Studio Ghibli explores the story of two children trying to survive in the last days of World War II. Breakfast provided.

For this year's theme of peace, artist Chiho Harazaki will lead a workshop on how to make origami, focusing on origami cranes, for a 1,000 paper crane art exhibition. Students are welcome to stay for the full two hours or come and go as needed. Look for our origami stations around campus! History 78 is a survey of Japan’s history from the emergence of the earliest societies to the present. Topics include agriculture, religion, philosophy, relations with other Asian countries and the West, the samurai tradition, capitalism, industrialization, anime, manga, sports and art. In addition, this course will help you develop the skills necessary to write a thoughtful, well-argued research paper. Class assignments will include writing parts of what will become your final paper.

History 72 is a survey of the history of China from the emergence of the earliest societies to the present. We will focus on the rise of rice-based agriculture, religion, philosophy, relations with different ethnic groups, the dynastic system, contact with the West, industrialization, the establishment of the Communist state, and the transition to a capitalist economy.
This course will also help you develop the skills necessary to write a thoughtful, well-argued research paper. Class assignments will include writing the various parts of what will ultimately become your final paper.
