Welcome to English C1000 Hybrid!
FORMALLY ENG 1A
FORMALLY ENG 1A
My name is Jessica Budica and I went to Cal State Long Beach where I earned my BA and MFA in Creative Writing. I have always loved writing and using my creativity and I hope I bring that into my classes every day! Ultimately, my teaching philosophy and this course are centered around you, the student. This means I will always set you up to succeed through activities and lessons with ample feedback designed to guide you through each unit. We will also focus on getting in the field and learning through hands on experiences. Often I will push you, but I will never leave you unsupported or set you up to fail. And I think it is important that our course material not only aids in your writing journey but is relevant to your life. I want this class to challenge you and help you cultivate your ideas so you leave this class feeling not only more confident in your writing capabilities but also in your thoughts, ideas, and opinions. So, even if you don't feel ready yet, you got this! And we'll get through this together!
A Hybrid class is a course that combines in-person and online, taking all of the best activities from a face-to-face class and placing the majority of lecture content and reading material online. This means we still meet in class every Monday and Wednesday from 9am-10:15am and we still function primarily as an in-person class. This also means you will spend time on your own outside of our class meeting time covering the reading material and recorded lectures to ensure you are prepared for our in class activities.
Class Meeting: MW 9-10:15am, BGS 200
Modules will unlock Thursday at 12:01am for those who want/need to work ahead. You can access the next module once they have completed the previous week’s/module’s assignments
Important messages regarding grading, class feedback, or assignment changes will be posted in announcements (set up notifications to receive alerts when these are posted).
I will provide feedback (even if just a quick note) on almost all assignments in the gradebook comments. Small assignments will be graded within 1 1/2 weeks and major assignments within 2 1/2 weeks.
Emails and Progress Reports will be sent individually to students needing more assistance

English 1A is required my most 4-year institutions, and the great news is this class is so beneficial to all fields of study. We of course spend a great deal of time on academic writing, paragraph construction, and composing essays into organized structures. And when we look beyond these formal terms, we realize this means we focus on effective communication. Who can't benefit from that? We also concentrate on critical thinking; meaning, we deeply consider a particular subject or idea.
Course Description: This class focuses on composing the academic-style expository essay, which features a comprehensive thesis and logical support. Students will write original compositions increasing in level of difficulty and length, totaling at least 6,000 words, which will use rhetorical strategies such as textual analysis, causal analysis, comparison, and argument. Students will read, interpret, and synthesize non-fiction sources using Standard Written English and MLA format.
