COURSE DESCRIPTION

The 6th grade math course focuses on the following big ideas/units:

  • The Number System,

  • Ratios and Proportional Relationships,

  • Expressions and Equations,

  • Geometry,

  • Statistics and Probability.

Mistakes provide

great opportunities to learn.

Math is all about making sense and creativity.

We learn by making mistakes.

We learn by asking questions and every question is important.

If we do not try, we will not learn.

Understanding the concept is more important than finishing a problem.

Math is about making connections.

Grading 📝

Mathematics is now being assessed with standards based grading. At a glance this means:

  • All “grades” will be earned through assessments (these can be projects, quizzes, or tests)

  • Each assessment will now specifically focus on one or two content standards.

On assessments you will receive a score of 1-4, rather than A-F.

1 : Does not meet grade level standards

2: Partially meets grade level standards

3: Meets grade level standards

4: Exceeds grade level standards

You will have multiple opportunities to prove that you are meeting particular standards.

You will be able to “redo” major assessments.

Redo Policy

In this class you will have mostly quizzes and Tests for each chapter/unit.

  • Homeworking is your learning assessment.

  • Quizzes will have no retake. (this will be your first assessment of the standard. )

  • Test will be considered your final assessment. (This is your retake of the quizzes) So please make sure you are studying from your homework and quiz mistakes for the test.

  • If needed students can redo a standard test if needed. (This will be on individual basses, if requested or needed)

About Mrs. Duhra

My name is Apparjit Kaur Duhra. This will be my fifth-year teaching Middle School Math at Sacramento Valley Charter School, and I am extremely excited for this school year. Math has always been my passion, ever since I was young, and I started my teaching career in mathematics a little over six years ago. I hold a bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from California State University of Northridge. I worked as a Communications engineer for the City of Los Angeles for 10 years before I decided to stay home with my two daughters. My interest in teaching began when I started volunteering at my kids' schools and enjoyed working with children. I then went on to earn my teaching credentials in Mathematics from the National University. I believe it is very important to give quality time to our children for their success in the future. Outside of teaching, I enjoy spending time with my family, listening to music and participating in cultural and outdoor activities.
