Homestead Spring Musical

The school musical was Mamma Mia! this year, and it was a great success! There were four performances over the course of the May 10th weekend. There were many talented singers and dancers who took part in this musical, one of them being senior Anna Ousley. Anna felt really good about how the musical turned out, citing that it really came together in the last couple of weeks of rehearsals. Her favorite part of getting to do the play is getting to know the other leads and building personal relationships with her castmates. Anna plans to pursue theatre as a career after she is finished with school.

Landon Richey is also a senior who took part in this years play. He played the role of Bill Austin. With this being his senior play, he felt strongly that he needed to audition. While his high school musicals may be done, Landon plans on getting an education in acting and continuing to do plays and musicals in the future. He is currently starting rehearsals for The Producers at Summit City. Good luck, Landon, as you continue with this path!

Thomas Sidel appointment to Naval Academy

The United States Naval Academy is a prestigious military college in Annapolis, Maryland. They aim to produce leaders with the "character to assume the highest responsibilities of command, citizenship, and government." They have an acceptance rate of 10.8%, selecting the best future members of the US Navy and Marine Corps. Congratulations senior Thomas Sidel, who will attend the US Naval Academy later this summer.

Thomas always had the dream of going into the Armed Forces out of respect and astonishment for its members. Thomas enjoyed the hands-on feel of engineering, so the Naval Academy is a nice fit with its STEM curriculum. He will start his "Plebe Summer" on June 27th, where his freshman year will be a mentally and physically challenging process. Thomas believes "that the Naval Academy is the best route to prepare Naval Officers for a career in the service."

Eli Griffin Appointment to West Point

West Point is so selective and prestigious that earning a degree can be compared to earning a degree from an Ivy League school. They take pride in their core values of "Duty, Honor, Country." West Point's 2023-2024 Academic Year Theme is about Innovation, Technology, and the Future of National Defense. Congratulations to Senior Eli Griffin who was accepted to be a cadet at West Point!

Eli was inspired to go into the Army from his older brother, a member of the Reserve Officer's Training Course (ROTC) in the Air Force. He was sold on West Point's rich history and breathtaking view of the Hudson River. First year students like Eli, called plebes, can't choose a major until their second year. However, he hopes to go into mechanical engineering. After West Point, he will go to serve in the Army for 8 years. Then, Eli will either plan to stay for another 20 years or leave the army to pursue engineering.

will Jamison awarded the comeback scholarship

The Indiana Brady Comeback Scholarship is an award that honors both male and female student-athletes at the high school level from Indiana who have distinguished themselves by overcoming adversity or injury and returned and excelled beyond expectations in their respective sports.

Will Jamison is a senior basketball player at Homestead. As a varsity athlete, he was pushing to earn a state title, and he hoped to pursue a Division 1 basketball team in college. However, Will and his sister were involved in a tragic automobile accident the same day as the preseason scrimmage. Will had to go to an Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and had many of his organs displaced. Despite this difficult setback, Will had great perseverance. Just a mere17 days after the accident, William made his first shot on the basketball court. Through continual work and an unwavering belief, William returned to the court to play in a varsity competition his senior year, playing in eight games and weaving through traffic to score over twenty points in five of those games. While facing a potential life-ending injury, William never gave up on himself or his dreams. He showed the courage and drive to come back and once again chase his dreams.

Will was nominated by Homestead Assistant Athletic Director Kris Teusch, School Counselor Amy Hamilton, and Varsity Basketball Coach Chris Johnson.  Will Jamison won the Brady Comeback Scholarship out of all the male Indiana nominations, earning $1,500 for his hardships.

Thomas sidel awarded athletic behavior award

The IHSAA Exemplary Behavior Award is given by referees to players who show great sportsmanship and duel competitions. Senior wrestler Thomas Sidel has always made a point to treat the referees nicely because there are not many of them in the area. At the Homestead-Carrol duel on January 19, Thomas was awarded the Exemplary Behavior Award. The referee said in his report that Thomas shook his hand and thanked him after the match, which made the night "great and enjoyable for officials to officiate." Thomas is proud of his time in wrestling because he gets to set "an example for the rest of the team." He says that he is not "naturally gifted" at wrestling, so his "dedication" and help from coaches are well-recognized. Best of luck, Thomas!
