Updated Policies for E-learning

At the end of the 2022 Indiana Legislative session, school districts received guidance regarding school calendar requirements.  The statute outlined that schools must provide direct instruction to students during school cancellation days.   However, they also allowed high performing school districts to apply for a waiver granting asynchronous eLearning Days (without direct instruction) due to weather emergencies to be counted toward the 180 required school days during the 2022-2023 school year. SACS applied for and received the waiver to continue to use asynchronous eLearning Days for weather related disruptions AND for our scheduled districtwide Flex Days and High School PSAT and SAT testing dates.

New guidance from the Department of Education outlines that the waiver only applies to scheduled Flex and test days and does not negate the decision to hold all Indiana schools to three (3) weather related asynchronous eLearning Days in a school year.

This school year, SACS issued eLearning Days due to inclement weather on November 18, January 25, and January 26. Per Indiana statute, should SACS have any further weather-related cancelations, we must shift to synchronous Remote Learning where it is required that at least 2.5 hours of an elementary student’s school day, and three (3) hours of a secondary student’s school day, be comprised of direct instruction from teachers.

So moving forward, in the event of a school cancellation for the remainder of the 2022-23 school year, families will be notified via text, email, website alerts, social media posts, and TV/radio announcements whether the cancellation is asynchronous (no direct instruction) or synchronous (teachers live on Zoom with students).

Need for Old Film Cameras: Photography

Photo classes are in need of cameras, but not the fancy type. If you have any old point-and-shoot film cameras that you no longer need or want we would love to take them off your hands. These are the kind that you load film into and go (example below). Any brand/model would be great. We will put them to great use. If you have one to donate, you can stop by room 104 any time, or contact the email below. We really appreciate any help you’re able to give!

Also, feel free to contact Homestead's photography teacher Mr. Manco if you have a line on where these might be able to be bought in bulk (garage sale, thrift store, etc.)

Thanks so much for your consideration!

Please contact Mr. Dominick Manco with any questions at DMANCO@sacs.k12.in.us

Homestead Construction Project Drone Update

Adjusting to the inconveniences of construction has become a new normal for students and faculty here at Homestead. Despite the difficulty, the Spartans have remained resilient and flexible throughout the challenges! However, the last few months of waiting are just now beginning to pay off as we see more progress being made to the new building. We look forward to many more years of learning for current and future Spartans as the construction project is underway.

Please watch these videos for a drone update on construction to see the new additions to our building!

Parking & Drop off/Pickup Reminders

As Homestead construction continues, things such as student drop-off and pick-up change. One of the changes for the 2022-23 school year is the requirement that our families use the Door 1 drop-off and pick-up turnaround.

In the mornings, we have found that the Spartan Turnaround (see map to the right) works quite well, and parents get through in less than 5 minutes (not including time on Homestead Road).

In the afternoons, parents should go through this same Turnaround for student pick-up. Unfortunately, some of our neighboring businesses are seeing an uptick in afternoon parking (during after school pick-up). We kindly ask that you do not park in the lots of our neighboring businesses. Whether it be all day or for just 30 minutes to pick up your student from school, there should be no parking at the fire station, Saint Elizabeth Church, or Summit.

Not only does this after-school parking impede our neighbors from utilizing their own lots for their patrons, it causes some unsafe conditions when students cross the streets at non-crosswalk locations.

So, please, use the Homestead Turnaround (entering off of Homestead Road) to drop off and pick up your student. Thank you.
