It’s time once again to celebrate all of the incredible people who make SACS such a special place—those who teach, clean, cook, organize, drive, and care for our students every single day!
Through the SACS Education Foundation, staff members from across all schools and departments are recognized each month with the SACS Superstar Award. We’d love your help in shining a spotlight on the amazing work being done at Homestead by sharing this with your students and nominating your colleagues.
This year the Spartan Alliance Marching Band had a sensational season! At the Indiana State School Music Association competition, the band placed third in the state. This is a huge achievement because the last time the Spartan Alliance Band got third at state was in 2019! Next, at the Indianapolis Super Regional Bands of America (BOA) competition, Homestead received Outstanding Music Performance and third place in class 3A. Additionally, Homestead was 1 of the 14 finalist bands out of 91 competing bands in the preliminary round at this competition, and they were awarded 8th place in finals. Finally, The Spartan Alliance Band competed at Grand Nationals. Homestead was 1 of 36 semi-finalist bands out of 108 competing bands in the preliminary round, and they were awarded 18th place in semi-finals. Great job Spartan Alliance Band for such an amazing season!
November 13th was World Kindness Day, and our district decided to surprise a SACS bus driver with a heartwarming gift.
One of our bus drivers, Akimu Salawou, has a brother in Africa who has recently fallen ill. Salawou had purchased a plane ticket and was planning to visit his brother during the month of December to care for him him, however, his leave from work would have been unpaid.
When the SACS Transportation Department heard about Salawou's brother, they came together to collect enough money to cover his pay for December, as well as other travel expenses.
Read more about Akimu Salawou and the SACS Transportation Department in this WANE 15 article.
We wish you well Akimu. Thank you so much for being an amazing member of our SACS team!
The Homestead Jazz Ensemble 1 has been invited to perform at the 79th Midwest Clinic - International Band and Orchestra Conference in December. After a rigorous audition process last March, the band was reviewed by music educators and the Midwest Board of Directors and was accepted to perform at this years conference. The last time a band was accepted from Fort Wayne was 1988. This is a tremendous honor for our students, directors, and Homestead community.
The band will be performing for an audience of nearly 1,000 music educators from around the world. They will feature guest artists Antonio Garcia (trombone), Dr. Tom Walsh (saxophone), and Sara Denlinger (flute).
