FLEX DAY ~ STEAM ~ Project Based Learning

We had a GREAT day learning from Ryan Murray from Keep Indiana Learning! 🚀

As we work toward integrating STEM and Project-Based Learning (PBL) into the learning experiences at Covington, today was an exciting opportunity to begin building our foundation and thinking about what this can look like for our students.

Our goal isn’t to add one more thing to teachers’ plates—it’s about finding meaningful ways to engage students in authentic learning, problem-solving, collaboration, creativity, and critical thinking.

Today was just the beginning! We are excited to continue learning, growing, and figuring this out together as One Pack.

Elementary Handbook:

Attendance Policy

Regular attendance is necessary, as it is a prime factor in student success. When a student is absent, a parent should call the school attendance line prior to the beginning of the school day. Every school in SACS has a 24-hour automated attendance line for parent use.

If the school does not receive a notification call, school personnel will attempt to contact the custodial parent for verification of the student’s absence. If a custodial parent cannot be reached, attempts will be made to contact each person on the student’s emergency listing until someone has been reached. If no one on the emergency listing can be reached, school personnel will make a visit to the student’s home address. If no one is home, school personnel may make inquiries from a neighbor(s) regarding the student. If still no one can be reached and the student’s absence has not been verified, local law enforcement authorities may be notified. The goal of this procedure is to ensure student safety.

A note from the parent providing the reason for the absence should also be sent with the student upon returning to school.

Student ID Badges

Student RFID Badges will be used to:

Scan on/off the bus
Enter/exit the building

This system is designed to streamline processes, enhance student safety, and reduce manual tracking.

RFID badges will be worn on each students backpack. We will zip-tie the badge to each students backpack. Please make sure to bring their backpack to school each and every day. All bus riders and walkers will scan their badges when they enter and exit the building.

BIRTHDAY TREATS / Invitations

To help keep all of our Coyotes safe and healthy, please keep the following in mind:

All snacks and birthday treats must be store-bought and individually wrapped (per student handbook).
Birthday treats may be dropped off in the office. The teacher will be notified, and the student can pick up the treats from the office.
Please be mindful of student allergies. Teachers should communicate known allergies with families when appropriate.
Birthday celebrations do not always have to include food! Fun items such as pencils, erasers, stickers, bookmarks, or other small school supplies are great alternatives.
To help maintain an inclusive and positive school environment, birthday or party invitations may not be distributed at school. Please share invitations outside of school hours.

TECHNOLOGY NEWS

Technology Devices

All technology devices will remain at school, along with their charging cords and charging blocks. If we are aware of an upcoming weather situation that may impact our school schedule, devices and chargers will be sent home with students.
