Catholic Life

Our Journey in Faith

The Catholic Life of the school is integral to what we do at Sacred Heart School and runs through all aspects of school life.  We have a welcoming, caring community built on Christian values, where all members, adults and children are valued and encouraged to achieve their potential as children of God.  The Catholic life of the school is rich in opportunities for children to encounter God and to deepen their relationship with Him as a loving, compassionate Father.  Our Catholic Identity and ethos is explicit through our learning environment, our Religious Education curriculum, our prayer and liturgy provision, our policy and practice, our community cohesion and our pupils’ behaviour and attitudes.

School Environment

The physical environment of our school testifies to the Catholic identity and character of our school.

Religious Education Curriculum

Religious Education is a core subject and is planned, taught, assessed and monitored with the same rigour as other core curriculum subjects.  Please see ‘Our Curriculum’ area of our school website for full details of our Religious Education curriculum.

The intended outcome of Religious Education is to enable religiously literate and engaged young people who have the knowledge, understanding and skills – appropriate to their age and capacity – to reflect spiritually, and think ethically and theologically, and who are aware of the demands of religious commitment in everyday life.

Our Family Community

We actively support family life in the occasions and events of the school, and, together with the Parish of Sacred Heart and St John Fisher, we nurture our children in the Catholic faith and sustain our Catholic Identity.  Newsletters are sent home to explain the importance and encourage participation. Our Parish

At Sacred Heart School, we have such strong links with our Parish community.  We are so lucky to have the Sacred Heart Church next to our school grounds.  Father Graham is a very regular visitor in school and our pupils enjoy joining the Parish for Mass regularly across the year.  We are delighted that so many children join the Parish for Mass on a Saturday or Sunday.  Come along and join our celebrations.  Mass begins at 5:30pm on Saturday or 11:00am every Sunday.

Liturgical and Worshipping Life of the school

Prayer, worship and liturgical celebration are central to our Catholic tradition and form an integral part of the school day and year.  Please see the section on ‘Collective Worship’ for full details of the liturgical and worshipping life of the school.

Behaviour, Conduct and Attitudes

The children tell us that they enjoy school and are happy.  From a very early age, children are able to describe ‘what is special’ about Sacred Heart School when visitors and new children come to the school.  Surveys and pupil conferences tell us that they see Sacred Heart School as a good school in which everyone is friendly to each other.  Children say that they like their lessons, the frequency of themed days and special events and this contributes to them becoming joyful, happy children who conduct themselves well.  They value and respect others and enjoy congratulating one another on their successes and achievements.  Their very good attitudes to school-life supports them in recognising their capacity to praise, give thanks and the need at times to say sorry and ask forgiveness.
