Family is everything in my world. My fiance and I love to travel and spend time at camp. My two kids are amazing young adults that are fthe best gift and legacy I have. They are intelligent, fun, creative, caring and good humans. Luke is a Mechanical Engineer working at Pratt and Whitney in Ashville, NC. Emma graduated from Suffolk University this Spring and has moved to the west coast to explore living in Portland, Oregon.
Who am I as a teacher?
I was born in Boston and moved to North Anson Maine when I was six. I grew up in a small town where everyone knew me for my parents owned the General Store. I worked at the store and spent my summers as lifeguard and swim instructor.
I graduated from the University of New England with a Bachelor's of Science Degree in Marine Biology. I spent some time in the field studying herpetology and analyzing drinking water in the lab. I decided teaching was for me so I could share my love of science and the natural world with kids.
My first four years of teaching were spent at Sanford High School teaching all levels of science. I have been teaching students at Saco Middle School since then. My Master's degree focused on teaching through inquiry and this lead me into the PBL model. I have spent my professional teaching career teaching varied core classes and facilitating student's understanding of how we are connected to the Earth. My favorite moments of each year are those when dawning of understanding appears on the faces of students.
The National Council of Teachers of English has defined 21st century literacy skills as...
• Developing proficiency with the tools of technology
• Building relationships with others to pose and solve problems collaboratively and cross-culturally
• Designing and sharing information for global communities to meet a variety of purposes
• Managing, analyzing, and synthesizing multiple streams of simultaneous information
Through the 7 and 8 PBL journey our students will achieve these skills in a varied and interdiciplinary approach! Our students will draw from nature to read, create and share stories for themselves as well as their community to enjoy. Students will explore literacy beyond the classroom in authentic connections within the field and within community based opportunities.
