Each learner has a personal account on the School domain which gives access to the Google Suite of apps - the Chrome browser with all its apps and extensions, Google Classroom, Google Drive, Google Docs, Sheets, Slides, Forms, Sites, Calendar, Hangouts, Maps, Google Earth and more. These tools allow our learners to research, collaborate, work efficiently, connect with their peers, share ideas in real time, seek support and create their own content. Being cloud-based, learners can work on any connected device wherever they are. They can work offline - work syncs as soon as they are back online and work is saved automatically. The G Suite has an intentionally simple design which allows the focus to be on the content.
Google Classroom is a learning platform for distributing and collecting and assessing student work. Google Docs allow multiple students to easily edit, comment on and view a single document in real time. Forms allows for collecting data and displaying same in a graph or in a spreadsheet. Google Sites is a collaborative web page creation tool. Google Slides is a collaborative and visual space that allows learners to create and share. The Youtube app in the G Suite gives access to a veritable video editing studio and users can create, share and view content within the school domain. YouTube has also become a powerful search engine in its own right. Even Gmail is developing a missing email culture amongst learners.
Google has the power to redefine what the learning space looks like. This is a learning space where learners gather feedback from their peers, where they jump into a document and collaborate, a virtual space where they can gather in a Hangout and help one another, a space that amplifies teaching, where they interact with and learn from one another and where they reflect on concepts and ideas.
Connection at school is via Wi-Fi and learners can access their accounts through their smartphones with teacher permission. While convenient, smartphones have their limitations. The only other devices permitted at school are Chrome books and these can be purchased with the necessary management software from the SACS CHROMESTORE, see the link below. Once registered on the site, you will be able to see the devices on offer and the respective pricing.
Chromebooks are not compulsory, however should you son wish to use a device at school it has to be a Chromebook.
*We highly recommend all of our Hostel learners to have their own Chrome Book device for homework and project work.
SACS CHROMESTORE:
Although parents are able to purchase the devices via various hardware partners, we recommend purchasing Educational Chromebooks on the SACS CHROMESTORE, operated by CloudEDU. They are Google’s premium Education Partner in Africa. They specialise in Chrome Education solutions and have the experience and deep knowledge to support our device initiative.
When comparing Chromebooks from different suppliers, you’ll want to compare apples with apples. The Chromebooks sold on our ChromeStore are Education Chromebooks and differ from the retail Chromebooks available in stores.
Education Chromebooks are purpose-built for children and schools. Common “retail” Chromebooks may not withstand the school environment and not be built to survive long in the hands of children. Education Chromebooks are built to withstand the wear and tear of daily student use and endure the rigours of the classroom environment:
US military spec, with reinforced edges and sturdy case;
spill-resistant keyboards; and
Corning Gorilla Glass®
Education Chromebooks, unlike their retail counterparts, come with an Acer 3-year Fetch Repair Return Warranty. This stands in stark contrast to most one-year warranties that require you to take the device back to the store. Our partners at CloudEDU have long standing relationships with the manufacturer and can provide extra peace of mind.
We know you’ll appreciate the ease of ordering from the ChromeStore, as well as the peace of mind knowing that we have partnered with a company like CloudEDU that was founded to support schools and their ethic in ensuring that we provide a safe and secure technology enriched learning environment.
