AP United States History (APUSH) is a college-level course that examines the political, economic, social, cultural, and diplomatic development of the United States from 1491 to the present. Students will explore how the United States developed over time, while considering the experiences and perspectives of diverse groups of people.
Rather than simply memorizing names and dates, students will learn to think like historians by analyzing primary and secondary sources, identifying patterns and change over time, evaluating cause and effect, comparing historical developments, and developing evidence-based arguments.
Throughout the course, students will return to several major themes, including American identity, migration and settlement, politics and power, work and the economy, America in the world, geography and the environment, and American society and culture.
By the end of AP United States History, students should be able to do more than recall what happened in American history. They should be able to explain why it happened, understand how people experienced it differently, connect it to larger historical patterns, and use evidence to make a convincing argument about the past.
