Digital Media Literacy

Youth today have never been so connected to ‘tech’. They are highly proficient at operating their personal devices, however computer-specific skills (typing, word processing, software and hardware skills/knowledge) have fallen to the wayside. Many students are not familiar with basic computer operations and typing skills. In a world where more and more businesses and services are migrating online, our youth risk being at a disadvantage if they do not have the skills they need to access things like health care, government services, employment opportunities, education etc. 

In addition to this and perhaps more importantly, youth access to personal devices and the internet has made them extremely vulnerable to the dangers associated with various forms of digital media. Because of how quickly this change has occurred, schools and families have not been able to keep up with the necessary education and support for youth to navigate these forms of media safely. 

In this course, students will learn about Digital Media Literacy while developing their computer skills.
