Hi, I’m Sarah!

Students usually call me Mrs. Hoyland but Ms. Hoyland, Ms. Loeb (my maiden name), and Sarah are all okay.  I was born in Costa Rica and raised here in Saanich.  I have one sister, Liz, who is a pediatric nurse.  My parents were both professional foresters, but they’re retired now and have often volunteered in my classrooms with nature walks and special crafts.  I live downtown with my husband Iszak and cat Luna.  On the weekends I enjoy spending time with my family and friends.  I like sitcoms, chocolate, coffee, my cat, crafting, Formula 1, getting outside, and learning about local plants.

I have a Bachelor’s in Education from the University of Victoria and have begun working towards a Master’s in Education focusing on early literacy.  I have taught Grades 1, 2, 4, and 5, and have been the “French teacher” for K-5.  I have worked at Brentwood and Sidney elementary schools, and most recently at Deep Cove, where I taught Grade 1 the past 5 years.  I have volunteered for district literacy, technology, and SOGI committees; and coached intramural sports including soccer, basketball, and cross-country.  I have also been a teacher-on-call in all the Saanich School District elementary and middle schools; teaching Kindergarten to Grade 8, and in French Immersion classrooms.  Grade 1 is by far my favourite, and I am excited to be back at Sidney!  I look forward to getting to know you and your child this year.  I encourage you to sign up for parent-teacher meetings when that time comes, and please feel free to say hi at pick up time!
