JUNETEENTH EXHIBIT INTRODUCTION
June 19th, 1865, more affectionately known as Juneteenth marked the day enslaved Africans in Texas received the word, they were free from slavery. Although the Emancipation Proclamation was signed in January 1863, the enslaved population of Texas unfortunately did not get the word until 2 ½ years later. The time that passed before the notice happened for various reasons. However, once the news was shared, various celebrations began to take place that continue to this day.
