The commonly used methods of landing on planets include propulsion parachutes and airbags. On our mission we are going to use a large amount of airbags and a parachute to lower the impulse on our lander. Because F=ma lowering the acceleration can be done by increasing the time period that velocity is changed over. Because a=Δv/t increasing the time will lower the acceleration, therefore lowering the force on the lander.
The advantages given by using airbags and parachutes are that they are much less complex than using propulsion to slow down and land. The main issues with this method of landing is that its not very precise and it will not be reusable.
Propulsion is much more complex than airbags however it can land much more precisely than a system using airbags would. Propulsion is also likely reusable as long as it has fuel and will likely have lower force applied to the structure landing than airbags would.
