My methodology will be a conceptual content analysis in which I will read and analyze a range of selected works including the Supreme Court Majority Opinions listed above, communist works, and speeches and propaganda from the Soviet Union in an attempt to draw thematic connections. I will read through the texts and annotate them in order to ascertain themes seen. Using these themes, I will create codes to track within each work. I will then read through the works again in order to track the frequency of the themes within each work. Finally, I will analyze the statistic significance of the connections using a chi-square test of homogeneity. This test will measure how prevalent communist ideas are in the older cases, Scott v. Sandford and Plessy v. Ferguson, and compare the difference, if any, to the newer cases. It will test if the growth of global communism and global pressure is associated with an increase in communist ideology.
This research is vital for a couple key reasons. First, it is important within the historical field because it will help to further the conversation on the connection between the larger Civil Rights movement and Cold War. Historians have conducted research about the similarities between the broader Civil Rights Movement and Cold War, but no research exists on the influence of communism and global pressures on all these specific Supreme Court Cases. My work will either help to further the ideas of these historians, or it will offering a differing perspective. This research also has impacts in a more tangible sense, as it can help better inform global leaders. It is important to understand the past in order to better understand the present, and having this new information can help global leaders make better informed decisions regarding international relations. Finally, it is beneficial for all citizens because understanding the nuances of the past is important to be an informed and responsible citizen, and this research provides a new perspective on the past.
This video is my initial research proposal, and it gives a brief over view of my project!
Note: Since my proposal, I have altered my project slightly. I will also be analyzing the cases of Scott v. Sandford and Plessy v. Ferguson in order to have a basis of comparison for my analysis.
