I learned SO much about my topic this past year! There was a big difference between production companies, and not one year did the amount of adult humor incidents remain the same for each production company. For the future, I hope this causes researchers to find specifically HOW it affects a child. Researching the specific impacts adult humor has on their behavior, their maturity levels, and their recognition of mature references or ideas.
I learned that presentation preparation takes a LOT of work. Every time I practiced in front of others, something new came up to alter and change, and if one slide changes, then you kind of have to start changing all of them AND edit the script. For the future, this can help me be more prepared time-wise and give myself extra time for alterations and edits to the presentation and script.
I learned that as a researcher, I need to RELAX and be realistic with myself. My biggest struggle was staying on top of things, and if I set a realistic and achievable goal and to-do list for the week, I would've been less stressed.
Thank you to everyone who has been with me throughout this process! Of course, thank you to McBride and Dobos for teaching me such an incredible course! Specific thanks to all who came to my presentation, both the oral defense and the symposium!
Abstract:
This study explores the presence of types of adult humor in top-grossing animated children’s films produced by DreamWorks, Disney, and Pixar over the past decade. The research focuses on four types of adult humor: spoken and visual sexual innuendos, nudity, and references to drugs or alcohol. Using a coding system adapted from Ellen Junn’s content analysis methodology, the researcher analyzed 29 films, 1 from each producer for each year. Findings revealed that adult humor is most prevalent in DreamWorks films, which accounted for 69 of the total 118 incidents coded. Spoken innuendos were the most common, appearing in 22 of the 29 movies, with the highest concentration found in Trolls Band Together (2023). Nudity and drug/alcohol references appeared less frequently but were still notable, particularly in DreamWorks productions.
