Watching Trolls Band Together
Trolls Visual Scene
Throughout DreamWorks, Disney, and Pixar, I am searching for what type of adult humor is most prevalent in their animated children's movies over the past decade. My objectives are to determine which producer contains the most adult humor and if there is any trend depending on the year. I have watched 30 movies, one from each producer over the past 10 years, and I analyzed for Sexual Innuendos (both visual and spoken), Nudity, and Drugs/Alcohol.
Progress and Challenges:
So far, I have finished my research! Achieving this definitely gave me a breath of fresh air because 30 movies is honestly very draining. Throughout the process, making a manageable schedule was the best way for me to accomplish my research. If I wasn't intimidated by my schedule, then I stayed on track and completed my set task for my week.
One of my biggest challenges was not overthinking my data points. I got to a point where every word spoken, I was like, "Could this be data?" After a couple of movies of being so hyper fixated on making sure I got everything, I realized that the point of my research is to find innuendos that everyone would notice, so overthinking it lost the purpose of it being a casual placement.
Data Highlights:
I have noticed in my data that it is just so dependent on the movie. There's not much of an obvious trend for the year released or producer. At first, I thought maybe Dreamworks carried the most, but as I watched more and more movies, that theory did not hold up. For example, Trolls Band Together was a DreamWorks film in 2023, and it had so many tallies, but Abominable was also a DreamWorks film, but from 2019, and it had 2. I also found that movies that are more cultural or historical, there is also little data.
I am extremely happy with my research so far. I have collected a lot of good data and have learned a lot about myself as a researcher. I have learned how to be more organized with my data, such as utilizing tables and color coding. Another thing I worked on was not mindlessly watching the movies. I think this is my biggest takeaway from my research because outside of this, I would mindlessly watch media, but now I realize the fun in focusing.
