I aim to create an emotional intelligence criteria using an emotional intelligence pyramid developed by the National Institute of Health. This emotional intelligence criteria will be used to assess emotional intelligence in elephants with a focus on how a new form of emotional intelligence evidence can apply to conversations regarding conservation and legal rights for animals. I am watching footage from documentaries, such as Secrets of the Elephants, on Disney+, and analyzing elephant behavior.
I've watched 4 of the Secrets of the Elephants episodes and have made my criteria more specific. The NIH pyramid has descriptions detailing each pyramid layer, and I have included more details from the NIH layers to make my criteria more specific. This has helped in behavioral analysis and accurately assessing elephant behaviors.
Watching the documentaries and using my criteria has been going well. The only true issue I have run into when collection data is the timing element. While I initially planned to watch multiple documentaries and docuseries, I've realized data collection and analyzing behavior takes longer than I anticipated so I will not be able to watch as much footage as I initially anticipated.
Inevitably, the emotional intelligence criteria I've developed is subjective to some degree. Though the different levels of emotional intelligence that I have developed are based off of the NIH pyramid, there are some behaviors that could be interpreted in different ways. To try to mitigate this, I've only commented on behaviors that the narrator comments on to make sure I understand the intent of the elephant behaviors.
Additionally, there are some behaviors that I've had a hard time classifying. I am worried that the behaviors I classify may not fully follow the criteria as they are observed in a lone elephant who is not in a herd, so they are not in a social dynamic. In order to fix this, I may entirely exclude behaviors found in lone elephants or choose to include all of them and explicitly say that they were not observed in a herd dynamic. This way, my data will be more consistent.

In collecting my data, I've begun to realize that data analysis almost always takes longer than anticipated. Currently, I have watched all episodes of the Secrets of The Elephants documentary and am halfway through watching my all episodes for the second time. I've also collected more data samples than I anticipated. The majority of data I have collected falls within level 6 of the emotional intelligence pyramid, which is labeled "Social Skills, Expertise in Emotions." I did not expect to have the majority of my data fall into this one category, but it makes sense given that the Secrets of The Elephants documentary is largely oriented around social behavior and it makes sense that such behavior would fall into that category. As I'm halfway through data collection, I realize I may not be able to get through all of the documentaries I anticipated watching, though this isn't much of an issue because I've also collected more data that I anticipated, too.
