Data collection began swiftly in January 2025, beginning with the documentation of the models casted using Daily Front Row, a prominent fashion publication and insider resource, and the recorded runway show on Prime Video. This information is essential to lead data collection through The Fashion Model Directory's database to be used in comparison to the Aesthetic Surgery Journal's model measurement averages. To prove VS's increased representation, or lack thereof, I've been documenting all 52 models identified by the Daily Front Row, cross-referenced with the recording of the show to ensure all women are accounted for. The average measurements of these 52 models from 2024 will be compared to the 272 models from VS's previous shows, segmented into years 1995 to 1998, 2015 to 2018, and the cumulative 1995 to 2018.

I am currently half way through my data collection. I have completed the initial stage of my data collection on the VS Fashion Show of 2024 and its addition to the Aesthetic Surgery Journal's data table. In Figure 1 and Figure 2 below, you can see my completed 2024 Data Table alongside my reconstructed 1995-2024 Data Table using segments of the Aesthetic Surgery Journal's collected measurements.

I was fortunate enough to find that nearly all 52 models had profiles on The Fashion Model Directory (FMD), allowing for a relatively seamless data collection process. However, this wasn't the case for all models. 11/52 (roughly 21%) of the models had incomplete or missing profiles*, 4/52 (roughly 8%) of the models not having FMD profiles at all. Models with incomplete profiles, highlighted in yellow, lacked information regarding either dress size, age, or both. In these situations, I turned to other model databases such as Models.com or agency databases such as Next Models and Ford Models to account for this missing information. For models with no FMD profiles, highlighted in red, I relied entirely upon data provided by the databases referenced above. If I was unable to find accurate information, especially when cross-referenced with other sources, I marked that cell with a hyphen (-). Due to this research discrepancy, the average dress size and age categories do not capture the true average of all 2024 VS models. This will be documented in my paper as a drawback to my research. However, due to the small amount of models with missing information, I am still confident in my research providing an insightful and trust-worthy reflection of VS's physical representation amongst models.
*Missing model information can be accredited to an individual's lack of popularity in the fashion industry, model agency restrictions on the release of their measurements, or their personal decision to keep certain information private.
My next steps include adding the 2024 data point to the Aesthetic Surgery Journal's line graphs to provide a visual representation of my data in comparison the years of VS shows past. However, I am currently working on conducting similar data collection on the Savage X Fenty Vol.4, Rihanna's most recent fashion show occurring in 2022, to expand my data analysis from just being a continuation of the Aesthetic Surgery Journal's publication. Savage X Fenty is a well-known lingerie brand and prominent competitor of Victoria's Secret as defined by New York Times best selling author and fashion culture journalist Amy Odell, The New Yorker columnist Naomi Fry, and award-winning director Matt Tyrnauer in his documentary Victoria’s Secret: Angels and Demons.
I am also considering returning to my VS data collection and collecting racial information for all 52 VS models. Race was a category I initially left out of my research, despite it being documented in the Aesthetic Surgery Journal, because I was focusing on body diversity by measurements. However, after meeting with my AP Capstone Instructors, I realized including racial diversity is an important element to body diversity.

After completing the first stage of my data collection, I've been able to compare the average model measurements from 2024 to years past. The changes in these averages are significantly less than I anticipated, showing little change in quantitative body representation since the show's six year hiatus. For example, 2024's average height, bust, waist, and dress sizes all decreased from 1995-1998. Similarly, average hip size only increased by 0.5 inches since the first three years of the show's running, leaving average model age to be the only category with a significant change of 8.9 years.
Throughout my data collection, I've learned to accept things not being perfect. Your plan going into your research will more than likely change in ways you didn't initially anticipate. I've had to adapt to missing model information, finding new sources, and even leaving data cells blank. I've learned that no research goes exactly as planned, requiring you to think on your feet and be flexible throughout the entire process. This was a difficult adjustment as I like seeing things work out exactly to plan, however I've maintained my confidence in the importance of my research despite setbacks. As long as you stay passionate, you will not fail.
