My original idea sparked from the rapid evolution of artificial intelligence and how it's currently a very controversial topic. At the same time, I've always loved videogames not just cause of the gameplay but rather the critical thinking and the ability to connect with emotional experiences that no other game can replicate. When AP Research first began I ran down a rabbit hole of idea's that felt meaningful and academically valuable for me.
At first, I struggled. Branching my ideas to eco-friendly drones to literary analysis of animation, but they didn't feel substantial enough for me to willingly research for a year. I didn't want my project to blow up in failure. So I connected to something I find entertaining and sustaining.
While exploring potential directions, I came across the game Event [0] where the player actively interacts with an AI through natural language logs, to progress throught he story. This was the first time I saw a game where the player's relationship with an AI was direct. Though it has a common ending ground the branching of conversation and direct interaction is very unique.
Making me realize that modern AI isn't just a tool in gaming — but can become a way to enhance a gameplay. Inspiring my central idea: to analyze how narrative driven games that uses AI to shape a player's experience, emotion, and decision making.
This Spark led to me exploring other academic sources that profound similar topics. I found studies discussing the psychology of player immersion, research on dynamic storytelling, and even articles that break down how AI systems can improve a player's experience in real time. The more I read, the more distinct my idea is. AI—driven narratives though have some implications for learning, empathy, and even understanding a player's perspective.
After this discover it reflected my idea and changed more towards: how interactive AI characters influence a player's emotional engagement and narrative experience. I decided to compare an AI-based narrative game with a traditionally scripted one.
Later, I encountered Road 96 a very different game, that still uses AI but in a much different sense. With a different procedural system and how it's able to assists the gameplay was much more unique then Event 0. Since every playthrough had no fixed path except the ending.
Both these connections sparked something, Though the game uses 2 different AI algorithms to generate a story. They both change due to the player's choices, in completely different ways.
Finalizing my question to: How does the presence of AI-generated storytelling in Road 96 and Event 0 influence a player's experience?
