About the Project
In the past there have been many studies and discussions held about the bias and inequality between men and women. This conversation has been looked at through multiple lenses such as work pay, discriminatory treatment, etc. My research aims to take this conversation one step further by looking specifically at the difference in treatment of celebrities on late night talk shows.
Despite the vast amount of research already done on gender representation in media, my research looks a a unique and niche aspect of media representation. Because of the growing relevance of talk shows on society and how popular and influential they can be, it is important to look at how it portrays celebrities. These talk shows give their audience a way to feel closer and more connected to their favorite celebrities by seeing a side of them that is off screen, where they can get to know more about their personality and lifestyle. This can make people feel more closely connected by finding out intimate, personal details about their top celebrities and seeing them be more vulnerable and human compared to when they are seen in their field of work. Due to the rising impact that pop culture and media have on society, the portrayal of these celebrities can influence the way people view things like gender, hence making it important to look at the way female and male celebrities are treated during talk shows.
