As children grow up, one of the first things introduced to them is reading. It helps them develop critical thinking skills, empathy, and understanding of various topics. Because of this, there have been countless studies discussing the importance of reading for young adults. Some studies focus on frequency of reading, but many focus on content in different books and the impact it may have on readers. Research often examines topics like sexuality and race as heavy topics that help the readers develop empathy, making these crucial for books to discuss and aid the reader in creating understanding. However, despite the claim that heavy and often complex topics should be dicussed to promote understanding and awareness, there is very little research regarding any type of abuse, specifically emotional. Due to the unfortunate frequency of emotional abuse, it is a topic relevant and relatable to many readers, though they may not realize it. Especially in children and young readers, it is extremely important to discuss difficult or complex issues to help them develop awareness and recognition for this situations, hopefully allowing them to develop more understanding towards it and better protect themselves from emotionally harmful situations. According to the American Society for the Positive Care of Children, around 81.8% victims of child abuse are neglected or psychologically maltreated, further illustrating the importance of discussing the issue. However, due to the lack of research in this area, it is imperative to gather information regarding the already existing presece of emotional abuse in children's books.
