This project explores the themes surrounding female movie characters with Borderline Personality Disorder, and how they have changed and developed over time. Using quantitative variable data collection, I will analyze the prevalence of five different themes in films about mental illness: violence, pity, faking and indulgence, comedy, and sexualization. By watching movies spanning from the 1940s to the 2010s, one in each decade (except the 60s and 2020s), I will be able to see how popular themes in these types of movies have changed in prevalence over time.

How have the themes surrounding female movie characters with Borderline Personality Disorder changed over time?
This project will aim to identify thematic changes in movies with female leads suffering from BPD from the 1940s to the 2010s.
I believe these films will have changed from portraying violent themes to more comedic themes over time.
