Gun violence is a pressing issue in America that refers to the use of firearms to cause harm, injury, or death to individuals or groups. Over 500 people each day die because of gun violence. Unfortunately, gun violence in America disproportionately affects certain communities, which highlights the existence of discrimination. For example, studies show that Black Americans are more likely to be victims of gun violence than their white counterparts. Additionally, there are racial disparities in the enforcement of gun laws and access to firearms, with some communities having easier access to guns than others. This demonstrates the unequal treatment and discrimination that exists in America, where certain groups are at a higher risk of experiencing gun violence due to systemic and societal factors. It is important to address these issues and work towards creating a society where everyone is treated equally and gun violence is not a pervasive issue.
It is important to learn about gun violence because it is a critical social issue that affects people's safety and security. Gun violence is a public health crisis that affects individuals, families, communities, and society as a whole. It can result in physical and emotional trauma, loss of life, and permanent injuries. By understanding the causes and consequences of gun violence, we can work together to prevent it and protect our communities. Educating ourselves about gun safety and gun laws can also help reduce the risks associated with gun ownership. Furthermore, being informed about gun violence can help us advocate for policy changes and support organizations that work to reduce gun violence.

This symbol is intended to convey the message that there is a need for peace and love, rather than violence and aggression. The image of a gun with flowers coming out of it is powerful because it represents the contrast between a weapon's destructive power and nature's beauty and fragility. By juxtaposing these two elements, the image seeks to make a statement about the destructive impact of gun violence on individuals and communities. It also underscores the need to find alternative solutions to conflicts and disagreements, rather than resorting to the use of firearms.
"Locks, lights, out of sight" is a common phrase used to describe the safety procedures that many schools have implemented to protect their students and staff from potential threats. Locks refer to the practice of securing classroom doors during a lockdown situation, while lights are turned off to make the classroom less visible to anyone outside. Out of sight means that students and teachers should stay away from windows and doors and try to hide in a secure location until it is safe to come out. Many students have heard this phrase during lockdowns and many fear the worst.
The American flag stands for the sacrifices of those who have died in mass shootings. To represent the tragic reality of school shootings, I used a sheet of lined paper to represent innocence. I then burned holes into it to mimic bullet holes. The red stripes of the flag flowing down the paper symbolize the blood that has been shed during these tragedies. Initially, I had planned to put stars on the corner of the paper to represent states where mass shootings occurred, but then I realized that every state in America has experienced one, making it the same as the original flag.
