My current research question is, can the methods of survival in The Martian by Andy Weir provide a solution for survival on the surface of Mars for humans in real life? My project is going to be a literature review. I will be researching data collected from the Mars rovers over the past few years and noting what is needed to survive and the limits of what is and isn't survivable on Mars. I will then compare this research to the methods of survival and descriptions of the environment mentioned in the book to see how accurate the novel is.

Mission Review
As this research project is brought to a close, I would like to reflect on my journey and what I have learned from completing this project. First, I would like to thank Ms. Dobos for her support throughout this project. I would also like to thank Mr. Newman and Ms. Lamb for their help when initially designing my project. Finally, I am so grateful for all the support I received from my classmates as well this year.
This project has taught me so much. I never realized how much information I could learn from reading a science fiction novel. I want to continue reaching this topic by analyzing other science fiction novels in the same way. One novel that I would like to read is The Martian Chronicles by Ray Bradbury. This novel was written in 1950 but, at its time, was known to be based on scientific research similar to The Martian. I would also like to read Andy Weir's other science fiction novels, such as Project Hail Mary. While they do not center around Mars, these space travel novels are still written with scientific accuracy. Exploring more novels that are similar to The Martian will allow us to apply applications of science-based novels to the genre as a whole rather than basing public judgment on one book. In exploring these novels, we may also find new ways to use science fiction in an educational setting. Past research studies have demonstrated the use of science fiction as a teaching tool for students to compare the correct and incorrect facts mentioned, as well as solve the fictional problems presented in the novels.
Through AP Research, I have improved my work ethic and critical thinking. By going through the process of designing a project, writing a proposal, conducting the research, and presenting the results, I have learned how the research process works as well as tips for future research projects so that they go more smoothly. I am so grateful for this opportunity this year, as I am more prepared for future research projects. As I plan to go into a research-centered field, the lessons I have learned this year will be important in preparing me for a successful future. Below I have attached my final research paper, which includes my methods, data points, and analysis from this project.
