My project goal is to be able to rank each game I look at according to their sexist nature compared to their success in terms of how many people play them and how much they make. My hypothesis in this research is, when video games tend to have a lower amount of women or have women who are presented as sexualized, then the game will have more success. The problem of how women are portrayed in video games is a serious issue considering the role they play in them and how irrelevant they are in games. While almost half of gamers remain female, they are highly under-represented in the gaming universe. Kim Gittlson, a BBC reporter, explains how since the 1990s, female characters are only made up by a low 15% and are typically only represented as the ideal, damsel in distress, or the over-sexualized warrior. (Gittleson 2014) Christopher Near as well explains how not all of these characters were even playable. A study shown in 2006 shows how 1⁄5 of female characters were active players, the rest were NPCs or non-player characters. With this, the characters had assets that were more sexually suggestive, attractive, and further from the body proportions of US females. Male players were far closer to the average US male (though, there are still many unrealistic characteristics found in male characters). (Near 2012) Women's representation in video games is hardly there and when it is, the way they are presented is highly skewed from the way they are seen in real life.
