About the Researcher
Hello! My name is Khadija Sow, I am seventeen years old and a senior at Rock Canyon High School. Through the works of Wes Anderson, Greta Gerwig, Dilara Findikoglu and Anna Sui, I found my passion for film and fashion. I also enjoy a wide arrangement of music from all around the globe. Most importantly, I love put these three very different artistic mediums into conversation with each other
On the other hand, I am very interested in social activism and looking for reform of unfair practices found in today’s society. My research holds a big part of my heart and interest due to the fact that it will address the misogyny found in the film industry, as well as how it affects a women’s point of view on themselves.
About The Research
Through my research, I will observe the use of the Male and Female gaze in popular coming-of-age films throughout the past three to four decades. The Male gaze is defined in simple terms as the portrayal of women through the lens of a heterosexual male. Often these women are portrayed as sexual objects with the sole purpose of serving the male target audience.
I hope to find how many movies possess traits of the male gaze as well as whether the film industry has moved towards the Female gaze over time. I deem this research as important due to the way coming of age movies are movies that many tween and teen females watch during the transition from “girl to woman”. This representation of women through the Male Gaze has led to mirroring behavior such as self objectification.
