Through this project, I learned a great deal. First, I learned how impactful my project could be if I continued my college research. I began this project thinking the information would truly apply to me and resonate with me because I love reading. However, the more I delve into my subject, the more I realize that the implication of studying leadership in the novels young adults are reading is truly essential. I learned that with this information, one can start to see what our next leaders are and a new way of literary analysis that has not been studied yet. As I continue my academic journey, I plan to continue growing my research, reading other novels and authors in the young adult fiction genre to get a broader range of data and analysis.
The skills I learned from the final presentation and the paper are skills I will carry with me for the rest of my life. There were formal presentations in high school, although nothing like the one we did in this class. Some of the skills I learned were preparing and having confidence in my presentation. I learned how to calm my nerves and prepare enough so that I had full confidence when I went into the presentation. The paper taught me how to find good academic journals and put them all together to create a paper. I learned how to put together multiple sources quickly and efficiently, and I know I will use this in college.
Some things I learned about myself during this classis truely the power of studying something that you are passionate about. In highschool you never really get the chance to pick the prjects you want to work on. Although in this class we had full raign on what we wanted to do. I learned that I can do school work and also be passionate. In addition, I learned that I still love to procrastonate my work. During this process I often left things till the last minute but I was still able to get it done.
Some special shout-outs to people who helped me with my project are McBride and Dobos. Through this process, they have been highly supportive and helpful when I had questions about my project, how to format things, and, honestly, just coming up with ideas. In addition, I want to thank DeFilippo for his support through this process and for giving me the space I needed to figure out my project, but still being there. Lastly, I want to thank everyone who came to my presentation and watched me present my findings, which I have been working on all year.
In this paper, I analyzed the Throne of Glass series by Sarah J. Maas to determine which leadership styles were the most effective and how they connect to real-life leadership theories. I reviewed all eight books and coded the main characters based on established leadership styles like transformational, inspirational, charismatic, authoritarian, transactional, and servant. Then I tracked how successful each character was based on whether or not they reached their goals. I found that characters who used inspirational and charismatic leadership, especially Aelin, were the most successful. These styles led to more trust, unity, and positive outcomes than outdated styles like authoritarian or transactional leadership. This project fills a gap in existing research by connecting leadership theory to fictional characters, which hasn’t been done before. It also shows how young adult fiction can shape how readers, especially young readers, see leadership and maybe even how they choose to lead themselves one day. Even though I faced some challenges, like the time commitment and the subjectivity of interpreting character actions, I grounded everything in solid leadership research. My work shows that YA novels can teach real leadership lessons and influence the next generation of leaders.
Next year, I will be attending the Universty of Colordo Boulder to study Journalism and Communication. I am very exicted to continue my education and I hope to further my research at Boulder and hopefully get published!
