So, we meet again. It’s been a couple of months. It is now early February, and I am knee-deep in data collection. During this process, I am identifying which character exhibits which leadership styles and traits and how these influence them. In addition, these observations serve as a foundation for later determining which leadership style was most effective in achieving their goals and how they influenced the people around them and their followers.
So far I have been able to annotate five books. In addition to annotating and coding the novels I have been able to put them into the tracker and start to see significant patterens regarding which leadership style fits which character. In addition, I have been able to stay on track regaridng what I need to get done and not fall behind so I dont have to cram all at the end.
Although the research process has been going well there has been some challenges that I have had to overcome. Due to the volume of all the books annotating, then coding, then putting it into my tracker can take a lot of time. Sometime this process causes me to get unmotivated due to how long everything takes. Throughout this process I have had to make up previus weeks readings due to me having a busier week so it can cause me to have more work.
Some data highlights I have noticed so far include trends regarding which character leans more toward each leadership style. As I have collected data, I have observed patterns in which leadership style is more prominent in each book for each character. Additionally, I have identified which trait within each leadership style is significantly more present. For example, in the first novel, one can see that under Authoritarian leadership, control over employees appears 3 out of 6 times despite the range of characters and situations. The traits that appear more frequently also tend to be the most effective in helping the characters achieve their goals.
This process has been very intresting and informative. During this time I have learned a lot about myself and who I am as a researcher. For example, I have found that when I am passionate about a subject I am able to put my time and effort into something and do it even when I dont want to. In addition, I have found that sometimes I have a hard time juggling the research and data collection each night when I have other things going on but as time went on I figured out a schedule that worked for me. I am very happy with myself and how my research is going. The way all my data is coming together is how I would have wished it went. There are patterns, outliers, and themes that are coming together to create a working project.
