Hello, I'm Amanda Bermingham. I am a student at Rock Canyon High School in AP Research, and this year I will be conducting research analyzing the effects of a weight loss drug called PhenQ on Drosophila melanogaster. Drosophila melanogaster are fruit flies and a common model organism used in research. They are a useful model organism for my research because they are widely available, have low maintenance, a short life span, and have a large reproductive yield. PhenQ is a weight loss supplement designed to increase metabolism through a key ingredient called a-lacys reset. I will be conducting research to determine if PhenQ increases metabolism in the fruit flies and, in turn, decreases their life span. This research is relevant to the scientific conversation surrounding the adverse effects of weight loss drugs, and my study can hopefully lead to new research.
