At the final destination of my journey, my last task of completing my research has been done! In the results, I found that there were certain genres in which Christian themes were more prevalent. This can be viewed in the chart below:
With these findings, I was able to determine which genre of young adult novels have the most mentions of Christian themes and which have the minimal amounts. However, with this research, some limitations are important to consider:
Only one book per genre was read, so the data may be skewed as there are many books in each genre
Each book could have had more or less Christian themes than are generally in their respective genres
Some data may be misinterpreted or not how the author wanted the instances read
Some data may have been missed
The books may belong to multiple genres
The book could have been based around another religion
With these limitations in mind, the data collection went very smoothly, with very little mishaps and hiccups. The data reveals that the Dystopian genre is most likely to have the most Christian themes, with the number of instances at 44. Therefore, it can be inferred that the books that contain the most Christian themes tend to be dystopian novels. The plot line of this book was strongly influenced by these themes and helped to build the story. The dystopian I read took place in a society in which it was illegal to love. This came about due to a story in the Bible about a woman named Mary Magdalene. It speaks on her and her inability to receive love from the men around her, which leads to her imminent death. While this is not a completely accurate depiction of the events that took place in the Bible, the book was centered largely around biblical themes and characters. Throughout the novel, these themes show up in many different ways, whether it is through the holy texts of the society or the relationships of the characters.
The influence of the Christian themes in the novel pertain to the idea that religion influences modern literature (and literature in general), which then influences society and societal values. This research can help improve upon how literature is used in different systems, such as the education system, as well as how literature can now be developed and written to make more of an impact or to get a point across in an emphasized manner.
