Starting the next phase of my journey, my next task was to work through the process of my research. As I was researching different methods of research for this particular topic, the most plausible method I viewed was coming up with a list of about four to six different young adult books to read and researching some young adult books that have Biblical context. I would then read the books and tally the number of times biblical references, themes, or stories were made or referenced and use this data to determine what has the most commonality connected to Christianity in young adult books. I would create a list of themes and stories including good versus evil, overcoming death/resurrection, and the crucifixion or dying for the good of everyone else, among other themes.
For this task, I am reading young adult fiction novels that have not been researched on yet and that I have not personally read. I will also look into the background of the author’s prior to reading the novels to receive a little more context about the origins of the themes of the novels. This will allow me to choose different topics that could contain Christian themes or stories and determine which of these are most commonly written about. This will further enable me to choose the novels that I will read. I will also need to research some common Christian themes and stories to use in order to have unbiased research. Each book will be a novel that I have not personally read yet so I will not be able to determine what novels have what themes.
During the research, I will take tally's of the amount of times themes or stories are referenced in different young adult novels and calculate the data and results. I will come up with a list of themes and stories that I would want to research and make sure that there is a neat space provided to be able to tally each instance of these themes or stories. I will be able to come to my conclusion at that time and be able to determine the most heavily influencing story by identifying which themes or stories have the most amounts of tallies. This will enable me to connect the theme or story to the novel’s plot line and analyze the impact of the common theme.
So far, I have chosen the books that I plan to read. These include:
Dystopian: Delirium by Lauren Oliver
Realistic Fiction: Since You've Been Gone by Morgan Matson
Fantasy: The Year of the Reaper by Makiia Lucier
Science Fiction: The Stars We Steal by Alexa Donne
Action/Adventure: The Princess Trials by Cordelia K. Castel
Romance Novel: Every Last Word by Tamara Ireland Stone
Mystery Novel: The Inheritance Games by Jennifer Lynn Barnes
My next task in this journey is to read each book and collet the necessary data to complete my research.
