From a young age, fairy tales have been something that have been a large part of my life, and I loved being able to read different versions of my favorite fairy tale story: Cinderella. I wanted to further this interest, and decided to focus my project around fairy tale films. However, I needed a question to relate to these that I knew would interest me. As I did more research on films and film studies, I came across a lot of research on how there was a large amount of negative representation of people of color in films, and how this could negatively affect young children.
One particular study I came across, the very popular Doll Study conducted many years ago, talked about how the lack of representation of Black people in movies caused young black children to identify more with white dolls instead of black ones, due to them never having seen anything different. This intrigued me, having once been a child who's only POC princess growing up was Jasmine from Aladdin (who, contrary to popular belief, is Arab and not Indian). Because of this, I decided to focus on how people of color are represented in films, and as this is something that's been a very important topic as of late with the casting of Black actress Halle Bailey in the Little Mermaid Live action, I thought it would be a good question to focus on.
Although I originally wanted to focus on the more general topic of all fairy tale films, after some reconsideration I decided to focus exclusively on Cinderella films. This is due to the fact that there are a multitude of Cinderella retellings alone, and focusing on other fairy tales along with Cinderella may have resulted in uneven data as not all fairy tales have as many movies that were made about them. This resulted in me narrowing in on my final question: Is the representation of people of color in Cinderella films adequate for a changing social climate?
As of today, my research proposal has been approved with revisions, and I'm set to continue to actually conducting my research. First I have to choose the selection of movies that I'm planning to watch and analyze, and I've decided to focus exclusively on Cinderella movies instead of a broader set of fairy tale movies, due to there being so many Cinderella movies available on the internet already. Also due to the fact that it is one of the most popular fairy tales to be remade, there's a great variety of castings that I've found on the internet.
My hypothesis is that as time goes on, Cinderella films will show more positive representation throughout their films, due to the fact that we are in a time period in where representation is being largely advocated for. I also believe that the futher that I go back in time to the older Cinderella films, the less representation I will find.

For the methodology, I decided to follow a simple coding style. While watching the Cinderella film, I will code each important character into four different categories. The categories are of the following:
Colorblind
Meaning that the color of their skin plays no role in their character
Stereotypical
Meaning that the person of color that was casted is acting in a very stigmatized manner, adding on to or building off of harmful stereotypes
Positive Representation
The person of color in the film is represented in a positive way that can help a young child's self perception due to good role models
No representation
The individual is not a person of color
There may be more categories added as I go on to watch the movies.
After coding the characters, I will use the data collected to create a conclusion for each individual movie, and then compare the conclusions for each movie to each other, more specifically to movies coming before or after it to truly understand if there is more representation that is adequate for a changing social climate.
Since I have already collected the list of movies I want to watch and analyze, now I'd like to actually watch the movies, and I may add movies that I discover along the way. I hope to finish by January-February.
