Instructional Media Services

Shared Foundations

The AASL Standards framework reflects a comprehensive approach to teaching and learning by demonstrating the connection between learner, librarian, and library standards. Each section of the standards framework was designed to reflect the others, ensuring that standards-related activities would be mutually reinforcing, simultaneously building capacity among learners, school librarians, and the school library.

The district and school based media specialists regularly works with classes on inquiry and research projects, accessing and utilizing credible sources, and how to use our district's library resources.

Instructional Media Services & Centers

The Instructional Media Services Department strives to meet the needs of students and staff by providing equitable access to print and digital information, curating library collections that represent the diversity of people and ideas, and facilitating a safe, collaborative, inclusive environment.

Sunnyside Elementary, Burnside Elementary, Twin Bluff Middle School, and Red Wing High School feature Instructional Media Centers (IMC), commonly referred to as “libraries.”   Each IMC contains a diverse collection of non-fiction and fiction books appropriate for students of all reading levels, as well as reference and instructional materials.

Elementary and Middle School IMC’s use Follett Destiny Library Management system and have interlibrary loans available between the sites.

RWHS IMC became part of the South Eastern Libraries Cooperating System (SELCO) during the summer of 2014 expanding Red Wing High School's capacity to serve its students, faculty, and staff with access to resources.  We have access to materials all over Southeastern Minnesota though interlibrary loan throughout the region.  Red Wing High School uses Horizon management system and Enterprise for the ecatalog.

EBOOKS

MacikinVia is our ebook collection platform at all sites.  RWPS collaborates with SELCO in 2020 to increase our current ebook collection by thousands of titles as well as easy access to multiple databases.

Accessibility

IMCs are open during regular school hours.  Students can access electronic card catalogs for all District IMCs from any school or home computer.

Technology

Media Technology Assistants at each site are the first stop for technology issues for students and teachers during school hours.  After hours contact techsupport@rwps.org

Curriculum

Each IMC is responsible for distributing, storing, and maintaining curriculum and Chromebooks.  These records are kept through Follett Resource Manager.

Library Collection Selection, Deselection and Disposal

Selection is an ongoing process of continuous review, evaluation, and weeding.  It includes the removal of resources and materials no longer appropriate and the replacement of lost or damaged materials of educational value.  Material is weeded by the Library Media Specialist and Assistants and is guided by the CREW: A Weeding Manual for Modern Libraries method.
