What is a food pantry?

A food pantry is a distribution center where hungry families can receive food to tide them over during times of need. The RW Food Pantry offers client choice where clients, with the help of a volunteer, can select their own food.

Who can get help?

Any person in Richland or Wilkin County, who is need of food to feed themselves or their families and cannot afford to do so, is eligible.

What types of food will I get when I visit the pantry?

Dry Goods: Beverages or Juices, Canned Meats, Canned Fruit & Vegetables, Cereals, Pastas/Potatoes or Rice & Beans.

Perishables: Fresh Fruits & Vegetables, Assorted Breads & Pastries, Dairy & Frozen Meats

How often can I receive food?

Food is available once a month from the Walk-in Pantry or Mobile Pantry.

Is an ID required?

A photo ID, such as a driver’s license, is needed on each visit to the Pantry. A short application needs to be completed upon a first visit.

The Wahpeton Walk-in Pantry serves clients four days a week.

Please arrive at least 15 minutes before closing time.

Inclement weather policy: The RW Food Pantry will close when Richland County issues a no travel advisory. Please check our Facebook page for current closure notices.

Mobile Pantry

Mobile Pantry

The Richland Wilkin Mobile Pantry is currently serving the communities of Fairmount, Lidgerwood, Rothsay and Foxhome once per month. Our Mobile Pantry operates throughout the year and offers clients most of the same foods as our Walk-in Pantry. The Mobile Pantry is at the following locations:

Inclement weather policy: The RW Mobile Food Pantry will not travel when Richland or Wilkin Country issues a no travel advisory. In addition, if the forecast high is zero degrees or below, the Mobile Food Pantry will not operate. Please check our Facebook page for notices and updates.

First Tuesday of the month:

Fairmount City Hall – 10:00 am. to noon

Lidgerwood Senior Center – 1:30 to 3:00 pm


Wednesday following the first Tuesday of the month:

Rothsay Fire Hall – 10:00 am to noon

Foxhome Lutheran Church – 1:30 to 3:00 pm

Food for Kids Backpack Program

RWEFP coordinates the Food for Kids Backpack Program in schools in Richland and Wilkin Counties. The Backpack Program for Kids provides children who are at risk of being hungry on weekends with a bag of child-friendly non-perishable food. The food is distributed weekly through the participating schools in Richland and Wilkin Counties. Students K-5th grade are eligible for the program. For information concerning participation in the program, please contact your local school.

Donations for the Backpack Program can made to the Richland Wilkin Emergency Food Pantry. Please designate “Backpack Program” with your donation.
