Polynomials

Students will understand that:

  • polynomials and polynomial operations can be modelled using algebra tiles.
  • polynomials can be added and subtracted by combining like terms.
  • the distributive property is applied to multiply a polynomial by a constant.
  • division of a polynomial by a monomial is the inverse operation of multiplying a polynomial by a monomial.

Essential Questions:

What is a monomial? What is a binomial? What is a trinomial?

What is a polynomial? What is a term? What is a coefficient?

What is a degree of a polynomial? What is the distributive property?

General Outcomes:

  • Students will represent algebraic expressions in multiple ways.
    • Students will demonstrate an understanding of polynomials (limited to polynomials of degree less that or equal to 2)
    • Students will model, record and explain the operations of addition, subtraction, multiplication and divisions of polynomial expressions concretely, pictorially and symbolically.
