Honestly - I got sick of kids losing music and finding paper everywhere...the binder solves the problem. I have also walked away from a method book that i have to purchase every year.
I am using the Apro Soundstart for Band and instead of buying a method book each year I provide:
a binder
subject dividers,
a luggage tag for their instrument with school info on it,
and some labels (for their binder)
But it's more than just an organization system for paper. It also holds any worksheets, and our daily Music Moment worksheets.
I also sometimes create what I call "Learning Sheets" for each individual song we are learning..so it's nice to be able to keep everything together and we can flip back and forth.
The first page is always this "All About Me and My Instrument" title page
Taking the time to fill in this information is helpful not only to me, when I find their binder on the floor or in a random hallway, but when they need to remember their assigned storage etc.
Next come the tabs
Big Brain Check Ins and Theory
Warm Ups
Method Book
Sheet Music
Resources (fingering charts, instrument maintenance etc)
I have begun creating a journal of sorts for students to use each class.
Big Brain Challenge.
This is a quick, written question or problem to solve. As soon as we have done our attendance (popcicle sticks), set up our chair, stand, and instrument...our next job is to complete the Big Brain Challenge
We review it right after I confirm who is away and then we go on with class and warm up.
Student Reflection and Class Reflection
At the end of each class I summarize what we did for the day and students copy it into their journal...I type these in a spreadsheet and post to google classroom. This let's kids who were away know what they missed, but also force us to reflect as a class on what we did.
For example. September 19
Handed out some music and binders, Played O Canada and sight readh Mahna Mahna
The students then write down one thing they did well and one thing to work on (a wish and a star) and circle an emoji for how they felt they learned.
I have also used these Band Specific Mad Minutes that you can purchase on TPT
The nice thing is that the answer key is the same for bass clef, and treble clef which makes marking so much easier.
