I think the first experience playing is really important. The kids need to come out of it feeling confident that they can put their instruments together and make a good sound, even better if they learn a few notes.
I have found that the fastest way to get everyone going quickly is through an event i call "Squeak and Squawk"
I bring in clinicians and have them introduce the fundamentals of care and sound production and get them playing their first note or two.
You can do this by yourself, but it takes weeks to accomplish what you can in a couple hours with more hands, and expert experience.
I provide the clinicians with a package to work with, and handouts for the students binders. (it is better if the handouts are in the binders in advance)
Below are a few of the resources I provide every year:
I use Apro Soundstart for my method book - It's first 3 notes are Fa, Sol, and La...I ask the clinicians to start with the first 3 notes of the concert b flat scale...and the kids usually are confident playing 6 notes in a couple of weeks...which means we can get into repertoire early.
