Course Description
The lab-based Biology course focuses on solving real-world problems through an application of scientific method involving a comprehensive study of the cycles of matter and energy as it applies to living organisms. Students will gain an understanding of cell structure and function, energy production through photosynthesis & cellular respiration. Topics under study will include taxonomic classification, genetics and heredity, evolution, and the nature of DNA.
Course Overview & Outline
Students are responsible for taking & reviewing notes as needed. Copies of the notes reviewed in class will be uploaded to Google Classroom within 1 day. After each notes review in class there will be a notes review sheet or Google Form to be completed during class and completed for homework if necessary. Practice and reinforcement worksheets and activities will also be completed. Quizzes & assessments will reflect content from the notes as well. Students will also participate in small-group laboratory experiments or activities as part of each unit of study.
Unit 1: Lab Safety & Scientific Method
Unit 2: Levels of Organization, Atoms, & Water
Unit 3: Cells
Unit 4: Cell Membrane & Transport
Unit 5: Cell Energetics
Unit 6: DNA, RNA, & Mitosis
Unit 7: Meiosis & Genetics
Unit 8: Evolution
Lab Procedures, Participation & Safety
Students are obligated to participate in laboratory experiments and/or simulations and follow lab safety rules. Students may be responsible for reimbursing the school for any damage made to the equipment.
You will need to submit a signed lab safety contract and pass a lab safety quiz. Students who fail to turn in a signed lab safety contract or pass the lab safety quiz will not be able to participate in lab activities until the requirements are met and will receive a score of zero. Additionally, students who fail to adhere to the lab safety guidelines will be asked to leave the lab and receive a score of zero on the lab assignment.
Required Materials
MacBook & Charger
